REPORTS TO: Principal and Executive Director of Instructional Support Services
JOB GOAL: To help reduce or eliminate speech/language/communication problems that interferes with the individual student’s ability to derive full benefit from the district’s educational programMINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Valid Alabama certification in speech/language pathology
- Master’s degree in speech/language therapy or communication disorders
- Experience in a school setting working with students with a variety of disabilities
- Proficiency in oral and written communication skills
- Effective interpersonal skills, with an emphasis on communication and collaboration with a wide variety of people and groups
- Ability to use technology to communicate, to plan and provide instruction, to facilitate student learning, to manage data, and to produce/submit required reports, correspondence, and/or financial information
- Ability to meet suitability criteria under the Alabama Child Protection Act of 1999 and Act No. 2002-457
- Such Alternatives to the above qualifications as state, federal and local law and the Board may require
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Demonstrates support for the school system and its vision, mission, goals, and priorities
2. Serves as a resource to school staff members in the development of a balanced program for oral communication and speech/language improvement
3. Provides a program to meet the individual communication needs of students
4. Assists and guides teachers in observing, describing, and referring suspected and identified speech and language impairments
5. Provides a thorough assessment and diagnosis of speech, voice, hearing, and language impairments
6. Assists in proper referrals of individuals to agencies and specialists in the community, as appropriate
7. Provides individualized programs of therapy to meet individual students’ needs and correct existing speech or language disabilities
8. Collaborates with classroom teachers and other school staff members to implement therapy by making suggestions for the students’ daily activities
9. Provides information, support, and consultation to parents and families, when appropriate
10. Provides in-service education and serves as a consultant to teachers and school staff members on topics concerning communication
11. Keeps thorough and ongoing records for the individual student receiving therapy
or other school-provided speech/language services
12. Utilizes SETS to maintain information on referred, screened, and eligible students
13. Participates as a team member in the identification of and assessment of students’ communication, social, behavioral, emotional, and academic problems
14. Works in coordination with teachers, administrators, consultants, and other appropriate professionals in identifying, prioritizing, developing, and implementing IEPs to meet the communication needs of students
15. Utilizes and implements assistive technology devices/plans
16. Provides social skills training to students in such areas as, but not limited to, social skills enhancement, appropriate peer interactions, conflict resolution, etc.
17. Plans and confers with the classroom teacher concerning any communication problems affecting students
18. Maintains frequent and substantive communication with staff
19. Complies with local, state, and federal regulations regarding special education records, reports, and services
20. Maintains and submits required reports, records, and correspondence in a timely and accurate manner
21. Properly cares for equipment and material resources of the school system
22. Cooperates with all teacher regulations and responsibilities in the school
23. Adheres to local Board policies, administrative procedures, and other like directives, as well as state, federal and local laws
