About the position

The Information Technology Trainee position is designed for individuals looking to enter the field of information technology. This role is a trainee classification that typically lasts for one year, providing a pathway into various specialty areas within the IT department, including Programmer, IT Support Specialist, Department Systems Specialist, Application Developer, and GIS Specialist. Under close supervision, trainees will learn and perform a variety of technical and analytical duties across different domains such as application development, customer support, network administration, and systems programming. As trainees develop their skills, they will gradually take on more responsibilities and require less supervision. The position involves working on systems programming and network administration tasks, which include developing, testing, implementing, and maintaining software and hardware infrastructure. This may involve managing connectivity between different platforms that support automated applications. In customer support roles, the trainee will assist end-users with electronic data processing systems, which includes installing new computers and peripherals, troubleshooting user issues, and providing training to enhance user productivity. For application development, the trainee will engage in designing, developing, testing, and maintaining various business applications, ensuring they complete all phases of the application development life cycle. Candidates must be prepared to undergo a thorough background investigation, including a criminal history check, fingerprinting, and a drug use history review. With supervisor approval, there may be opportunities for intermittent remote work, but candidates must reside within the Sacramento region and be able to report to a physical worksite with little notice.   • Completion of at least twelve (12) college-level semester units in programming languages for positions designated for Systems Programmer, Programmer, or Application Developer.
